Vet visit today!?

I have to take my 12-year-old cat to the vet today for her regular checkup. She has hyperthyroidism and I have to take her regularly so they can do blood work, etc., to see how she%26#039;s responding to her medication. She is doing beautifully!!

The problem I have is that she absolutely FREAKS OUT when I take her to the vet.....a couple of times ago the vet actually heard a heart murmur and I know it was because of the stress she was putting herself in. The next visit the vet didn%26#039;t hear the murmur so that%26#039;s good news. My question is, could that level of stress actually hurt her? I%26#039;m afraid it might kill her!!! I mean, her heart rate was well over 200. And she%26#039;s not a kitten anymore. I just get worried about my little girl, that%26#039;s all.

One of my 3 cats has FHV and everytime she gets stressed, she has an URI so I have a house call vet just for her so she doesn%26#039;t get stressed while being checked out because she%26#039;s home and my 2 other cats goes to my regular vet.

Did the vet recommend something you could give her to mellow her out a little bit? I think there%26#039;s something called %26quot;calmz%26quot; that is available from online pet supply stores. I%26#039;d be sure to ask the vet about it so you%26#039;re sure there will be no interaction with her current meds. A friend of mine used this when she took her cat to a show.

I had a cat that turned into Velcro when we went to the vet so I put the carrier in the living room for a week before the visit and put treats in it several times a day. Then I%26#039;d close the door and talk to her, pick her up and take her for a ride around the block. Then bring her home and let her out, giving more treats. That way she got used to the process of going for a ride. If I talk to her gently while we%26#039;re at the vet she isn%26#039;t quite as bad. She seems to like the vet tech best and I don%26#039;t know why..... I make sure kitty gets another treat when she goes back in the carrier.

I had another cat that was so scared it was like she was paralyzed, her eyes were real big and all she did was drool. She eventually got over it, but that was scary.

Have you checked around for a mobile vet that could come out to your home instead?

Vet visit today!?

I completely understand your concern trust me I%26#039;m a cat person too and recently had to put down my 19 year old kitty, that was not a good night for me. Anyway, it would be wonderful if your vet could make house calls, maybe you might consider asking since the vet has seen how stressed the cat becomes. The stress certainly isn%26#039;t good for her, but I don%26#039;t think it will killer her. Are there treats or toys you could giver her to try occupy her focus?

my cat hates car rides, all car rides, doesn%26#039;t matter it it%26#039;s to the vet or icecream parlour, she hates cars...and i think this is normal for cats...

before i married my wife she had a cat that i would keep when she had to go out of state, and poor maggers got stressed on the way to my place and on the way back home...it isn%26#039;t the vet, it%26#039;s the idea of going somewhere.
