Does a cardiologist s opinion have to be taken as gospel if you disagree with his opinion?

i have been given three prescriptions for blood pressure, but my blood pressure after this third heart attack is around 120 over 72, what point would there be in taking medication for a control problem that does not exist! i take vit e and q 10 and a multi vit and feel fine. the cardiology opinion has me scared stiff to raise my heart rate by exersizing in case i fall down longer than ten minutes away from a defibrilator! my confusion is now complete.

Many people with a history of a heart attack will be prescribed blood pressure medicines. This is not necessarily to treat the diagnosis of hypertension (high blood pressure).

People that have had heart attacks are placed on a very specific medical regimen to reduce their risk of another heart attack. Specifically, this would be a beta blocker, an ACE or ARB, aspirin, and a statin (cholesterol med). The beta blocker and ACE/ARB can and will lower your blood pressure. They also reduce the work load on your heart to reduce your risk for another heart attack.

Sometimes people cannot tolerate their medications as it may drop their blood pressure too much. In such cases, they may have their medication doses reduced and sometimes stopped.

BUT, with that being said, if you aren%26#039;t comfortable with your cardiologist and/or his explanations do not make sense to you, find a new one that you do like!

Hope this helps.

NO They LIE about cholesterol

Dr Roizen is even coming out about it.

If you are uncomfortable with this Dr. you are certaintly in line to find another Dr. You don%26#039;t want to be treated by a Dr. you don%26#039;t have confidence in.

My cardiologist was crap, so I requested to see a new one. I agree with you, your blood pressure sounds fine and I wouldnt want to be taking medication for no reason.

Go get a second opinion. If you have no confidence in the doc, ask to be referred to another one by your family doctor.

He does have some knowledge of these conditions, thats why you attended in the first place!

Without the tablets for hypertension, your blood pressure would be much higher! It takes time for the drugs to leave the system, missing one or two tablets does not mean you dont need them.

Exercise should be structured at a gym. Build up with the help of a trainer, unless you dont believe them either!

The cardiologist is there to help you, he doesn%26#039;t get a bonus for everyone he %26#039;knocks off%26#039; the waiting list.

get a second opinion-if u can pay private for one too-doctors like any of us arent magicians -only human

To be fair, cardiologists do know more than most people about hearts (mainly because this is their job!), but if you don%26#039;t like him, there is no point continuing treatment with him! You are perfectly within your rights to ask for a second opinion, or ask for a different doctor.

Is it just possible that you disagree with your cardiologist%26#039;s opinion because you don%26#039;t know or understand enough about cardiology? There is a reason these doctors train for many years - that%26#039;s what makes them specialists.

I suppose you could stop taking your blood pressure medications and wait and see whether you come to any harm. Why not exercise as well? After all, what does a cardiologist know?

Hi, How old are you, what is your weight, and tell me about your diet.

PS. never ask these questions here. You can get unprofessional advice.

It%26#039;s important that you take any medication as advised by a doctor. Your doctor will probably be on some sort of kick back scheme from a pharmaceutical company for prescribing these medicines. If you dont follow his advice you may be denying him a new set of golf clubs or even a holiday. That would be just plain mean.

Neither Vitamin E nor Q10 will contribute to your health and multivitamins are of little or no benefit to most patients, as you cannot make use of more than your RDA of vitamins, and indeed some are toxic in excess.

As far as your medication is concerned many drugs which are used for raised blood pressure, are also statistically cardio-protective, in patients with a past history of heart attack or a high risk of an attack in the future. These include beta blockers, Ace inhibitors and A2A drugs. These and other drugs are often not given to lower your BP, nor to make you feel better, but to statistically increase the odds on your survival!

I suspect there is a more than even chance that your cardiologist might know a bit more about heart disease than you were taught at your medical school. Your potentially foolish behaviour may well therefore be putting you at increased risk of dying!
