How to get her to take her blood pressure meds?

My mom has been taken to the hospital about 3 times in the last year because she started having these panic like attacks where her heart would race. She would never follow through and make appointments with doctors though. She was told to get on this high blood pressure medication (even though she doesn%26#039;t have high blood pressure). She didn%26#039;t do it though. Well, today she was taken again. Her heart rate actually reached 230 at one point but did go back down. They gave the name of her condition but I don%26#039;t remember what it was. Anyway, she was only in the hospital for about an hour. They said she didn%26#039;t need to spend the night or anything but she does need to get on torprol (blood pressure med) and make an appointment with a cardiologist. What can I do to make sure she takes her meds? I went and got them for her and she said she would take them but not in front of me. The nurse even said that this could still happen again despite being on the meds which I thought was messed up.

unfortunatly,if your mom has not been deemed %26quot;incompetent%26quot;

by the doctor and/or court,there is not a whole lot you can do to make her take care of herself. you cannot FORCE her to do anything.Just remind her often that you love her and want her to be around for many more years. You could always speak with her doctor and/or other family members and try to work out a way to keep an eye on her.Best of luck to you and your mom. Unfortunately,sometimes it takes something serious to happen to give that person a wake up call on how precious life really is...

The medication you%26#039;re referring to is Toprol XL, a beta blocker, which controls a person blood pressure and heart rate. From what you%26#039;re telling me she%26#039;s taking it, not so much for her BP, but for her uncontrolled heart rate. I%26#039;m surprised they didn%26#039;t admit her to undergo further tests. As far as your question, what can you do to make sure she takes her meds......well your mom is an adult and has to realize the importance of taking her medications daily. Because she doesn%26#039;t suffer from high BP they probably prescribed a low dose such as 25mg or 50mg, again I don%26#039;t know her history. Just have a sitdown with your mom and tell her to try the meds out for a while. She has nothing to lose from taking the medication under a watchful eye of the physician, but the other end is she might have this high heart rate again if she%26#039;s not on it. Hope this helps. Bye.

Help your dad find a new girlfriend now. She%26#039;ll be your new step-mom when your mother drops dead from complications of tachycardia. Stupid woman.
