What does it mean when they tell you, you have a two vessel cord?

I have had 2 ultrasounds now and am about to have my third on monday may 7th. The techs tell me that I have a two vessel cord, however there is nothing wrong with the baby that they can find. size, weight are fine. all the organs are working and are within the abdominal wall where they should be, and the heart rate is at the rate it should be. So my question is what does this mean now?

What does it mean when they tell you, you have a two vessel cord?

When a baby has a two vessel cord, or otherwise known as Single Umbilical Arterie or SUA, it can mean a variety of things. The umbilical usually has three vessels, two arteries and one vein. Most patients who have SUA have normal healthy babies. Sometimes these babies has slightly lower birth weights but are healthy over all. There is a chance that the baby could have heart defects, issues with the central nervous system or congenital abnormalities like trisomy 13. Usually if there is an issue with the organs or heart it can be seen on the ultrasound. Your doctor might do a more thorough ultrasound exams to make sure they catch any defects. It is important to remember that most babies come out fine and healthy and that your ultrasound didn%26#039;t show any worries. Who ever wrote that they think it means two babies needs to think about if they have the back ground to answer the question before they do. It is commonly seen in twins but it does not mean you are having twins. The main thing is not to worry and relax. Keep your appointments and talk with your doctor if you have any concerns. I wish you the best and a wonderful delivery.

My cousin just had a baby and she had a two vessel cord. I did research before the baby was born. It could be a kidney or heart problem to Trisomy 13 or 18. Quite a few children with Down Syndrome have two vessel cords because they have kidney or heart problems when they are born.

HOWEVER, most likely your baby is just fine. My cousin%26#039;s baby was perfect in every way and more than likely so will yours :)

Good luck and if you have questions, ask your doctor to tell you what it means!
