Double Bypass & Stroke?

My 51 year old father went to the ER on 1/13/08 with chest pains. They determined he had a heart attack and sent him to a hospital that could handle his situation on 1/14/08. On 1/15/08 they went in to do a stint, only to realize things were worse than they thought and he needed bypass surgery.

On 1/17/08 they did a double bypass surgery and cleaned up his coratid artery. Sometime during his surgery or shortly after in recovery he suffered a major stroke, affecting 1/3 to 1/2 of the right side of his brain.

As of right now he is paralyzed on the left side and not expected to ever regain use of that side. He is also still being sedated, when he is unsedated his blood pressure gets very high, as well as his heart rate and his oxidation levels in his blood drop so they have to resedate him. He keeps running a fever and his dependency on the respirator changes from day to day.

They went in yesterday to clean out his lungs, which should help some.

They havent figured out the fever.

Double Bypass %26amp; Stroke?

post operative stroke from major heart surgery unfortunately is a common thing, that big of a surgery almost always results in forming clots somewhere in the body which then travels to the brain or lungs leading to a stroke. His symptoms are usual for being sedated for so long after the surgery and it will take him a while to regain normal functions after waking up. The stroke doesn%26#039;t necessarily mean he will never regain movement on the affected side but he will need lots of care and love.

Double Bypass %26amp; Stroke?

vete a la mierda

Double Bypass %26amp; Stroke?

I%26#039;m sorry to say it, but it sounds like your father may be dying. The reason the doctors are doing all this is to try to keep him alive. This may be the reason your father is so upset when he isn%26#039;t sedated. Check and see if he has a living will, which will tell you if he wants to be resuscitated. If he doesn%26#039;t this may be what he%26#039;s trying to say when he gets agitated. I%26#039;m sorry and wish you the best of luck.

Double Bypass %26amp; Stroke?

I wish I had a dime for everytime I%26#039;ve heard someone say that they are %26quot;growing tired of the yo-yo...%26quot; I%26#039;m sorry for your dad, it%26#039;s a rough thing to have to go thru. Unfortunately, what you are experiencing is pretty much par for the course. Doctors do what they can, but they are not super human and they do not have all the answers. The fact is that less than 20 years ago, your dad would be dead by now. That he continues to live is nothing short of a medical marvel and a tribute to his determination to stick around. The longer he has to be sedated, the less time they have to work on his issues, sedation like that will eventually lead to his demise yet if he isn%26#039;t sedated he will likely hurt himself with his agitation, it%26#039;s a real catch 22 situation. I would suggest that you spend what time you can with your dad while he is still with you.
