It is extremely important that either the dentist or the oral surgeon...whoever does the work....knows about your heart condition. Depending on the nature of your condition, you may not be a good candidate for IV sedation.

If you are a good candidate, then the dentist usually gives you a premedication pill (like Valium) before you come to the office to calm down any anxiety you might have prior to the procedure. Then, once there, an IV is inserted into your arm and a sedative medication is begun. With IV sedation, you are not put to sleep like general anesthesia, and you are able to respond to instructions. It%26#039;s sometimes referred to as %26quot;twilight sleep%26quot;. You are not really aware of what is going on, and after recovery, you will probably not remember.

I would follow the advice of the oral surgeon or dentist, especially with the heart matter. If you are fearful, you may try to get the dental procedure using local anesthesia.

check with your doctor before any sedations. IV sedation doesn%26#039;t necessarly make you not feel pain, but just makes you not care about the pain...i%26#039;m not sure of the side effects

IV sedation works very well; however, if you have heart concerns, you should DEFINITELY talk to your doctor before consenting to this type of anesthesia. If one dentist is reluctant to do it, then there is a reason. I wouldn%26#039;t try to go around this issue by finding another dentist who WILL risk your health, and possibly your life!

I had something like that once... the problem is that the whole experience can be like a really, really bad nightmare (you%26#039;re in pain but detached from it...). True, you *wake up* from it, but it was a really unsettling experience. It sounds like a pretty intense thing to go through for just a tooth repair, though. Are you sure you can%26#039;t do it the old fashioned way? It would make the heart issue a moot point, wouldn%26#039;t it? Definitely check with your doctor if it%26#039;s an issue. Especially since dentists will lie to avoid using what they consider unnecessary medication. Doctors are so afraid of getting in trouble over prescribing certain types of drugs they%26#039;ll risk putting patients through unnecessary discomfort to avoid getting a high enough prescription count to get red flagged by the watchdog agencies.

It costs at least $150 extra for the sedation as well, I%26#039;m a penny pincher so I just got novocaine.

It was a breeze, I tried it both ways, save your money.
